About the event
A fully guided photography workshop at the famous Red Kite feeding station in Wales. Expect to see and photograph at least one hundred Red Kites and several Buzzards coming to feed. We will be close to the action in a hide booked out exclusively for our event. Full photography support and tuition provided.
This photography workshop will take place atGigrin Farm in mid-Wales, probably the best place in the UK to get up close and personal to these magnificent birds. In fact, Gigrin Farm was the last stronghold of Red Kites in Britain and thanks to the forward-thinking farmers the much-persecuted species was saved from extinction in this country at this very location. The staff have been putting out a regular mid-afternoon feed everyday for several years and the birds come from miles around to enjoy the feast. On some occasions, you can witness up to four hundred Kites circling and feeding at the site at one time, providing an amazing spectacle. Late winter is a great time to visit the hide, seeing the highest number of Red Kites visiting.
Wild bird photography is one of the most challenging but rewarding subjects to try to capture with your cameras. During this workshop you will be guided on the best camera settings to use, along with some tips and techniques for capturing the action. Expect to fill your memory cards with hundreds of images of these iconic birds. We have chosen a hide at the farm that will give you excellent, clear eye-level views of the feeding frenzy. You will be able to capture up close feeding shots with the countryside in the background as well as shots of the birds in the sky. A medium-to-long lens will get superb close-ups of the action, but a wider angle will capture stunning views of the mass of birds above your head. With luck, by the end of the workshop, you have taken some fabulous images and have the skills and know-how to apply these techniques on future photography outings.
